Life Is A Cabaret Old Chum - For A Fee:

Just when you think politicians couldn't get any dumber, the Albany City Council is proposing a Cabaret Tax. Under the proposed local law, any nightclub, or establishment offering entertainment using musical instruments plugged into amplifiers, would be required to pay a $150 fee. Now they want to tax the music too.
You would think that in this depressed economy, lawmakers would be looking for ways to ease the burden on their constituents. You would also think that they would see the need to work with their local businesses, which includes a bustling Albany night club scene. Imposing this fee isn't going to shut anyone down, but the way I see it, it's just another way of picking the pockets of those who can pay it. Taxing music is morally wrong in many respects. Music for many is relaxation, for some a profession and a passion.
The local music scene has always been fragile over the years, but it's been on the rebound over the last decade. Cities, town and villages all over the Capital District offer free entertainment throughout the Summer season, and into the early Fall. Nightclubs all over see a down-slide in business during these months, unless you operate in Lake George or Saratoga. So during the cold months, these businesses get the opportunity to catch up, so to speak. Hitting them up for ANOTHER TAX is just not fair. The musicians are also directly effected by it. I've dealt with club owners for four decades, and can tell you first hand that most travel a fine line between staying open, and going bust. Every dollar helps. The more they make, the more generous they are when dealing with musicians.

But it's not just the music scene that would be effected by this, the arts in general, plays and other artistic expression's would be forced to pay if using amplified music. Church's & other not for profits would be exempt for this lunacy.
If you live in Albany, send an e-mail to the members of the city council that support this nonsense, and tell them no thank you, I'm already taxed to death. Leave the damn music alone!

I've been wondering what my first blog post for 2012 was going to cover. Troy is just such a vibrant city at times, with so many fun and exciting things going on, I just couldn't decide what the heck to write about. The politics in this town pretty much write their own stories, and plus, my bud Jim Franco has his hand on most things happening in that arena...so no dice there. Sports? I'm a baseball fan who wish's the grand old game went year round, and I'm extremely upset the Yanks just traded Jesus Montero...so I'm not writing about that either. Just when I thought I had writers block -- there on today's front page of the print edition of the Record was, the billboard that broke the writers bedrock.
Now you cannot, should not, nor will not eat cheese, or we will gross kids out so bad, they will vomit in mom's mini van after seeing the disgusting GIANT BILLBOARD of an over-sized, obese, cellulite marked thigh - and mom may veer off the road into a ditch at the distraction, but please don't eat the cheese cause you may get fat. You know what? If you over indulge in many things, you may put on weight. The key with cheese is like anything else -- moderation, moderation, moderation! It just really gets to me when some agenda driven group is allowed to put up a billboard as distracting as this. The DOT should have some sort of regulation against this type of advertising. I also think that those rolling billboards should not be allowed on our highways where people are traveling more than 70mph. Am I the only one who thinks this is a safety concern that someone should be looking at? There's enough road hazards out there every day that it's not in any one's best interest to provide additional distractions for drivers.
Look folks, if you sit, Ala George Costanza, in your underwear eating a giant block of cheese on a regular basis, or stuff a dozen or so double cheese-burgers down your throat every week -- you may develop a blockage or four. Putting a giant, obese, cellulite ridden thigh on a humongous sign above eye level on a well traveled road, just might kill you faster than that slice of cheese on your sub will. If the organization who paid for those gross billboards, took the money they paid, and gave it to a local food pantry, it would greatly help the many families who are struggling in today's economy.

Turkey, Turkey Trot & the Hottest Party Night of the Year:

The Thanksgiving holiday has always been one of my favorites. The three major components of this feeling has to do with the letter F --Family, food, & football. But beside the obvious attractions of the holiday, there is also a TT & an M involved in the mix. The annual Troy Turkey Trot begins on the holiday morning, downtown. Runners from all over the country take part in one of the USA's oldest road races, held right here in the Home of Uncle Sam. There is also a strong musical component added to the mix. For some reason, Thanksgiving Eve has become the biggest party night of the year.

Here in Troy, there will be plenty to do that night. The Ruck, located on 3rd St. will feature one of the best local bands around, Super 400. Members, Kenny Hohman, Lori Friday, & Joe Daley have traveled worldwide, waving the Troy banner proudly. They are throwback band of great musicians, who always put on a rockin show. Another HUGE show that night will take place at Revolution Hall. Emerald City, maybe one of the greatest rock bands to ever grace the local stages, come to the fabled music mecca, for their final show of 2011. The groups original members, Gary Brooks, Gary Tash, Rick Rourke, Ed Powers, Dave Costa, Gary Sagendorf, & Joe Mele, reunited after 30 years apart, and have not looked back. They have played every major Troy event this season (Troy Pig Out, Uncle Sam Jam, & Rockin on the River), and have gained a legion of new fans along the way. Their 4 part harmonies are unmatched by any local group, and their song list is like a classic rock jukebox. With three master guitarist leading the way, this will prove to be the best show of 2011. Sly Fox & the Hustlers will open, featuring the regional hit, SUNY Girl, from their latest CD --The Low-Life. Tickets are available at the door, which opens at 7 pm.
There will be music all over the city for you to choose from. It doesn't matter where you go, just come &, ENJOY TROY -- as I'll be doing!

Chow-dah Time in Troy:

It's time once again for the Troy Chowder Festival. This annual event was started five years ago as a joint venture between the city, and the Downtown Business Collaborative. Elizabeth Young, Chairperson of the BID, has done an amazing job in the coordination of this city signature event over the years. The combination of brisk Fall weather, chowder & music brings thousands of well behaved lovers of the clam to our city. Chowder Fest has become a, 'Destination Event', for the multitude of people who have come to know Troy as the event capital of the Great Northeast. I've added a photo from a couple of years ago to show the huge crowd that Chowder Fest attracts on a year to year basis. The video I shot last year, and shows the music, & gives a visual of what this event is all about -- food & fun!

This year's musical lineup is diverse, to say the least. We'll be kicking off the entertainment at 11 a.m. with the Blue Grass magic of the Mike McMann Bluegrass Explosion, with the Nelly's. The amazing, Tichy Boys take the stage at 12:45. Father & son combo, John Tichy (formally of Commander Cody & the Lost Planet Airmen) & one of the area's finest guitarist, son, Graham Tichy. The Rich North Tribute to the Stars of Country will come on board at 2:30 p.m. Rich North, in my opinion is probably one of the finest singers I've ever heard in this area. He was a finalist on the old, 'Star Search', television show. He will perform tunes by some of the greatest stars in country music history with his band, comprised of some of the finest musicians in the Northeast. So join us this Saturday, October 15, beginning at 10 a.m., to sample all the varieties of chowder, enjoy the great music, and most of all, to ENJOY TROY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Break out the cheap, overpriced plastic blow up toy's -- it's time for the 36th annual Uncle Sam Day Parade. John Rustin is putting in his wooden parade teeth for the big day, and Shirley Kelly & Gus Demars are waiting for their yearly convertible ride down 5th Ave like 2 kids on Christmas morning. The point I'm trying to make is that the entire committee works very hard to plan this yearly celebration, and all feel a weight lifted off their shoulders, once the parade is underway. Committee members include, Bill & Alta Reynolds - who also nurture the Ms. Uncle Sam Pageant like doting parents, four term former Lansingburgh Councilman Mark Wojcik, Nurse Darlene Simpson, octogenarians Shirley Kelly & Gus Demars (the last remaining Spanish American War Veteran), Jim Gordon, Mike Golden, Nora & Susan Dwyer, Carol Coonrad, Kelly Hardy, Randy Demars, Jeff Zovistoski, and John Rustin Sr - who recently celebrated his 96th birthday and had a facelift.
As you may have heard, the Uncle Sam Festival at Knickerbacker Park WILL NOT BE TAKING PLACE THIS YEAR. Last year's terrible weather caused the committee to take a HUGE financial bath, and a decision to take a year off, to financially recoup and fundraise was made. There will be however, an Old Daley Chicken BBQ at Germania Hall from 2-5 p.m. So take a ride there to grab a dinner, and come on over to Powers Park for some entertainment, provided by the dynamic horn band, Vehicle. They have reunited for a one time performance to benefit the Lansingburgh Boy's & Girl's Club in this first time fundraising effort. We are asking that those attending bring at least one non perishable food item, which will be turned over to the food pantry at the B& G Club. A pretty cheap price for the quality of music you'll get to enjoy free, on what's being forecast as being a beautiful Fall day in the high 60's .If you'd like to see some video of them, visit my YouTube page at either, Troy NY Events, or vc894. - there's some killer video of them at both Powers Park & Downtown Troy events. Another Great Weekend Coming Up in Troy:

   Get your party on this weekend in Troy, cause as usual, there's going to be more to do here than in any other Capital District community. Everything kicks off at the Italian Community Center, in Troy's 'Little Italy', on Friday night with their annual Italian Festival. The event runs thru Sunday afternoon complete with music, games, and music. Headlining the entertainment schedule will be Mr. Entertainment, Al Bruno, along with the fantastic, Good Times Band. The food has always been the highlight of this festival in my opinion, going back to the days when the feast was held in Washington Park. Headlining the food menu will be my favorite, Mr. Meatball!
   It's also 'Uncle Sam Weekend' up here in the 'Burgh. The weekend celebration kicks off on Saturday morning with a graveside ceremony at Uncle Sam Wilson's resting spot in Oakwood Ave Cemetery at 10 a.m. -- hosted by the Veteran's of Lansingburgh. Immediately following will be the annual, Uncle Sam Brunch, held at the Veteran's of Lansingburgh on 1st Ave. Tickets are available at the door. The 36th annual parade kicks off at 125th & 5th Ave. on Sunday, September 18, at 12:45 p.m. Marching bands, politicians, clowns (no comparisons with the politicians please) along with midget cars, and always the highlight of my parade day, watching Shirley Kelly & John Rustin do the 'parade wave' from their convertible. I'll be the parade announcer once again, trying hard not to get people upset with me at what comes out of my mouth sometimes. Right after the parade, the party moves to two spots. First, at Powers Park we will be doing a fundraising effort with the Lansingburgh Boys & Girls Club, featuring a performance by one of the most dynamic horn bands ever to grace the local stages, Vehicle. The group is comprised of all school teachers, and feature the vocals of the electric, Alejandro Williams. There is also an Old Daley Chicken BBQ being held at Germania Hall from 2-5 p.m. to fulfill the chicken dinner tradition of the Uncle Sam weekend.
   The annual festival that we usually have was stopped this year, due to dwindling attendance, and the fact that the committee took a real financial bath last year, due to the terrible weather conditions. Plus, the committee felt that the families were no loinger attending, leaving the, give me cheap beer crowd.
So please join us for all the fun and excitement here in the Home of Uncle Sam, all weekend long.

6th Annual Uncle Sam Jam/Power in the Park Classic Car Show:

The 6th annual Uncle Sam Jam will be taking place this Saturday at Powers Park. I've posted some pics of the first event, which we staged down behind Brown's. That day, we had 7 bands perform, along with belly dancers, rides for the kids, as well as wine tasting. I worked on the first event with Traci Christopher, then of Revolution Hall. We had a great crowd, until the rain hit that day. It's tough doing outdoor events in early October because of the weather, so the following year I moved the event to early September, at Riverfront Park. But attendance was not where we felt it should be,plus it was tough having 6 or 7 bands in a 6 hour time frame. In 2009 I moved the event again to Powers Park, and cut it down to three bands. Attendance spiked more than 50% the first year in it's new home. Last year, we added the classic car show and saw attendance spike even higher, with more than 2,000 attending over the course of the day. This years musical lineup includes, Stuck on Stupid at 2 p.m. --Emerald City, the Reunion Tour at 4 - and the Blue Machine, with Tommy Love at 6. The car show begins at 12 p.m., and is presented by the South Troy Timing Association. You can register your vehicle right at the park also. Food and drinks will be available, so grab a lawn chair, bring the kids, and come join us to ENJOY TROY! Read the Saturday edition of the Record for more info. See you all there. Nitro Jive Coming toTroy Night Out:

Nitro Jive will be giving a special Troy Night Out performance this week. Their performance originally scheduled for June 24, was rained out. All I can tell you is that if you enjoy a great swing band -- these guy's are the real deal. We're setting up a stage at Monument Square for this one. Showtime is at 7 pm. If you enjoy Latino music, beginning at 5, there will be a return performance by DJ Gabe Lozado. He'll be setting up in the parking lot next to the Arts Center on River St. If you don't enjoy either of these genre's of music, you can walk over to Barker Park to hear the fantastic Jazz group, the Lou Russo Quartet, from 6:30 - 8 p.m. Another great job by BID Director, Elizabeth Young. Join us for this end of the summer bash!

Cryin Out Loud Returns to Powers Park:

Cryin Out Loud, one of the finest horn bands in the Capital District returns to Powers Park this weekend. Lead singer Gregg Simmons is an amazing performer who has a knack of getting the kids attending his shows to be a part of the show. By involved I mean he gets the kids on stage with him, and lets them sing, dance, and just have a great time. Many performers are just so full of themselves, they tend to forget that it's not all about them -- but that they are there for the people who came out to hear them. The children who come to the concert series with their parents sometimes get bored. Not with Simmons around they don't. Gregg always makes sure that they are a big part of it. The band itself is just fantastic in my opinion, covering a very diverse set list. Being this is the final show of the regular season, I'm sure Mr. Simmons has a few tricks up his sleeve to make sure everyone in attendance, leaves the historic park with a big ol smile on their faces. Showtime is 6 p.m. Check with this blog on Saturday to make sure the show is on, being no one can say for sure when or if Hurricane Irene will be paying us a visit.
And please folks -- leave the dog at home or you may have to leave and bring your pet back home. Bring your dancing shoe's, party hat, and maybe an umbrella with you this week.

   After you enjoy the Stormfront show at Powers Park, make plans the following day to have an old time chicken dinner at the 55th Annual Rotary Club of Lansingburgh's, chicken barbecue. This is a 'take out only' event, which will happen right at the Boys & Girls Club, located at 113th St, on 4th Ave. The chicken dinner will be prepared by Brooks Famous BBQ, and will be served from 3-5 p.m.
Prices are:
Chicken Dinner -- Adults / $10     Children 12 & under / $5
Rib Dinner        -- Adults / $12     Children 12 & under / $7
Proceeds from this event will benefit the Boys & Girls Club & Community projects. Even if you can't attend, please consider making a donation to this worthwhile endeavour. For tickets, call the club at 235-4143, or just any member of the Lansingburgh Rotary Club.

Getting Into A New York State of Mind This Weekend:

One of the biggest drawing cards ever at Powers Park will be returning this Saturday. Make plans to join us at the historic park for a performance by crowd favorite, Stormfront. Mike O'Brien does an amazing job of replicating the music of the famed, 'Piano Man'. If you close your eye's during one of his shows, you would swear you were listening to Billy Joel. His mannerisms, voice and fantastic stage presence bring to life all of Billy Joel's popular hits with accuracy, and precision. His band, Stormfront is rock solid in their delivery of some pretty intricate musical arrangements, and just rock the house with their stellar talent.
Being I ask every week that concert goers leave their pooch at home, I'll try it again, NO DOGS ALLOWED. Cmon folks, Fido isn't going to get that lonely while you're gone. There's no beer allowed either folks --sorry. Bring your own lawn chair and get there early for a good spot as I expect one of the largest crowds of the season this week.

My Favorite Returns to Powers Park:

My favorite area performer returns to the Neil Kelleher Stage at Powers Park this weekend. Renee' Lussier, who has pretty much grown up on Troy stages, returns, by extremely popular demand on Saturday night. I remember the first time I met this young lady when she was just 13 yrs old. Mature beyond her years, she took the stage with the North 40 Band at the first Uncle Sam Jam in 2006. As soon as the first note came out of her mouth, I just said, WOW! Back then, you could see the talent, and poise she possessed on stage, along with the potential for bigger and better things, career wise.
Over the course of time, her talent has grown stronger, as has her on stage charisma and presence.
In the past 8 seasons at Powers Park, Renee has become a real fan favorite, and the only performer we've ever had that needed an autograph table set up for her fans.
Renee's show starts at 6 pm, so get there early for a good spot at the historic Lansingburgh park. Bring your own lawn chair please. Hope to see you all there on Saturday.

Rockin on the River continues tonight with a performance by crowd favorite, Blues for Breakfast/ The group covers the Grateful Dead, and have a great following. They've been one of the most popular groups to grace the big stage at the concert series, since it's inception 4 years ago. Showtime is at 5:30, so come on down & ENJOY TROY!

Many Folks Enjoyed Troy This Past Week:

   Thousands of people came to Troy this past week. Thousands left Troy with a good feeling about this wonderful city of ours. Beginning on Wednesday evening at Rockin on the River, around 5,000 came and enjoyed Michael Jackson Tribute band, Who's Bad. This was, by far the best attended Rockin show ever, with the show being nothing short of spectacular! Friday nights, Troy Night Out was well attended, and included a Latino Dance Party on River St- which was by the way, a great deal of fun. This feature brought more than 100 members of the Latino community, who danced the night away -- until the rain came that is.
   Saturday was just crazy at Powers Park, with the Refrigerators coming to the Historic park for the first time. The band was just fantastic, as was the crowd. More than 1,500 strong came and partied the night away at probably the best attended show ever at Powers. Sunday's first, Family Fun Day, at Carroll Hill School was also well attended, and quite a bit of fun. A musical performance by the wonderful teen girl group, Emeralds of July, along with Mike McCrae / Juggling Dangerously, and Magician Jeffrey Jene, provided the children with a full afternoon of fun and entertainment. The Troy PD did child safety seat checks, and provided some parents with new ones. The Troy FD was there giving tours of a firetruck to the children, along with educating them on safety procedures in their home. Overall, it was a great event for the people of the East side of Troy.
   It always thrills me to see great crowds coming to our city, and enjoying our city. I hope whoever the mayor is come Jan 1, that they will see what a benefit these events are to our city. Harry Tutunjian, whether you like him or not, has revitilized this city. Remember when there was nothing to do here -- I do, and do not want to see it happen again. Our Troy events brings THOUSANDS of people, who wouldn't normally come to Troy. It would be a real shame to see it all end with the momentum we have going now. Enjoy Troy people --- Enjoy Troy!

Back 40 Band
Troy is the place to be this weekend, with multiple events happening, at two points in the city. Beginning at 10 am on Saturday, the 4th Annual Troy Pig Out, at Riverfront Park will kick off. Last year, more than 30,000 attended this wildly popular bar b que event. 5 bands will be performing on Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m., including, the Lustre Kings, Sly Fox & the Hustlers, with local legend Ernie Williams headlining. Sunday's musical lineup includes, the Vibratones, Joe Mele Blues Band, along with the recently reunited, Emerald City. Hailed as the top local band in the 1980's, Emerald City will hit the stage at Riverfront Park at 2:30 p.m. Join us for all the food and music over the weekend.
The Back 40 Band will headline this weeks country show at Historic, Powers Park in Lansingburgh. Long recognized as the area's # 1 country act, the group will perform at Powers for the first time. Having opened for such national acts over the years as, Trica Yearwood, Rascall Flatts, Diamond Rio, and Billy Ray Cyrus, the group has maintained a high level of excellence over the past two decades.

The 2011 River St. Festival takes place this Saturday, June 18th, beginning at 10 a.m. More than 70 food, craft, jewelery, along with a wide variety of other products, will be available up and down River St. 3 stages of music will fill the street at one of Troy's signature events of the summer season. Los Straitjackets, the USA's top instrumental rock n roll band will headline the National Stage, set up at 2nd St. & Broadway. They hit the stage at 4:40 p.m. Graham Tichy, one of the area's premier guitarist will open the day at 11 am with the Graham Tichy Project. The eclectic Neanderthals will go on at 1 p.m., followed by former MTV darlings, Blotto.

The local stage this year will be set up on the corner of River & State St. Performing this year in the following order will be, The Ginger Brothers, Museum Guards, Simple Theory, Sly Fox & the Hustlers, with local favorite, the Joe Mele Blues Band headlining.

A children's stage will be set up by the Arts Center, featuring a variety of entertainment, geared towards kids.. Food, arts and crafts, great weather, and fantastic music all add up to wonderful experience. Come join us and take a, Troycation!

McDonough Fundraiser:

   The Lansingburgh community is banding together to help out one of its own. Tim & Marion McDonough, and their children were burned out of their home several months ago. They have been living in a hotel waiting for their house to be rebuilt ever since. As you can probably imagine, the McDonough's are laying out quite a bit of money eating out -- along with other massive expenses related to living in a hotel for an extended period of time.
  Longtime friend, Kevin Vandenburgh, along with Pip's proprietor, Janis Zanda, and myself will be hosting a fundraiser at Pip's Athletic Lounge on Sunday, May 1, beginning at 2 p.m. Suggested donation is $20, with every penny going to the McDonough family. Food, music, and raffles will highlight the day, which I'm sure will be strongly supported by the community.
   The McDonough family has been in the 'Burgh for generations, and have been active forces in the community.. Tim & Marion have volunteered their time, as their children have gone through Lansingburgh sports programs -- with Tim still coaching. Their daughter Mindy is the new coach of Knickerbocker Middle School's modified baseball team --and doing a fine job I might add! The point I'm making here is that they are a large part of the 'Burgh, and it's up to us, their neighbors to help them out during this major disruption of their lives.

EXTRA, EXTRA::Easter Bunny Coming Back to the 'Burgh

   4/18/2011 (Lansingburgh); The world famous, Easter Bunny has announced he will be making a return appearance at Historic Powers Park on Saturday, April 23, at 12 p.m. Last year he performed to a SRO crowd of happy children, at the Summer mecca for lawn chair concert goers. "Over the years I've traveled to many communities to participate in their local egg hunts. But the 'Burgh is special to me, and the children always make me feel right at home, " said Mr. E. Bunny
   Last year, more than 200 children attended the hunt, with at least 200 happy children leaving with candy and a smile. "I think it's just great that the folks at Hannaford Supermarket, and Whitney Young Health in Troy donate all the candy for the hunt every year. And it's nice of the City of Troy to donate the use of the park too," added the Easter Bunny.

   This years event will begin at 12 p.m.. It is open to children ages 1 -10 years old, and will be held, rain or shine!

Hello Again to Chubby's:

   In case you hadn't noticed, Chubby's has returned to the 'Burgh. The corner of 114th & 5th Ave is once again complete, with the re-opening of Chubby's Subs. The eatery shut down for a few months, to re-organize, and re-energize what I call, the 'Bermuda Triangle' of my stomach. Between Chubby's & Snowman Ice Cream, I'm sure my battle of the bulge will once again be a losing battle. You see, I, like many others suffer from this eating affliction of HAVING to combine, a Top Rounder, with a cone from the Snowman. I'm sure that this combo does not meet the new recommendation by the federal government, that we eat no more than 600 calories per meal.
   If you remember what a Neba was, and haven't tried Chubby's, I recommend that you do so right away. I've seen so many different places try to replicate a real Neba over the years. None have been able to replace the iconic sandwich in my opinion -- until Chubby's came around. Real, fresh cooked roast beef, on a sesame roll -- now thats the real deal. They also have great subs, soups & salads, all at very family friendly prices. Not to mention the homemade potato chips -- which I normally do not eat -- but who can resist those homemade spud delights at Chubby's?
   Welcome back Chubby's --- you were missed. Remember to support your local businesses & eateries as much as possible. Every time you go across the river to spend your expendable income, you increase the chance of having a vacant storefront in your community. Enjoy Troy!!!!!!

Baseball, Steroids, & Government Waste

   With the opening day of baseball coming up fast, fans like myself are looking forward to hearing the words, play ball, resonate throughout the nation. But once again, as it has over the past few seasons, steroids in our beloved game dominate the headlines. The Barry Bonds saga is a sad one.
When he burst on the scene in 1987 as a second generation superstar, he was lean, fast, and could do it all on a ball-field. As he grew older his body, we'll just say kind of, overdeveloped. Look, it was as obvious as the never ending voter fraud conspiracy case in Troy, that the guy was on the juice. I mean, his head even got bigger!

With that said, the point I'm driving at here is that this whole big investigation into steroid use in baseball -- is a Fucillo HUGE waste of money. Who the heck cares about what a ball player is doing to himself. The government gives people a Social Security check if they're drug addicts or alcoholics. But they persecute baseball players for using performance enhancing drugs? Not that I'm condoning the use of them, but what's the difference between doing steroids, and players in the 60's thru the 90's, using amphetamines, or players in the 70's & 80's using cocaine as a means to stay stronger & be more alert? All were illegal --correct?

   In my mind, there's no place for any of that in baseball -- but it did occur, and there's nothing that can change what's already happened. But for the Federal Government to waste millions upon millions of dollars investigating this issue, with more going to be spent, it's time to put an end to it all. Could you imagine if just a fraction of that money could go towards helping the homeless,or feeding the hungry? Or maybe putting some of it towards finding a cure for cancer, or ALS. Or distributing money to struggling municipalities facing critical fiscal times.

   The athletes who used performance enhancing drugs will suffer later in life, and they have nobody to blame but themselves. Some are already paying. Watch Jason Giambi, or A-Rod as they now have more and more leg injuries. Giambi injured a hamstring just walking to the dugout a few seasons ago for God's sake. I pray that they don't both wind up like pro footballer, Lyle Alzado, who died a horrible death, directly related to steroid use. I'd love for the government to furnish us with a tally sheet with the total cost of this investigation. These publicity hungry politico's should move on real issues. All to often they forget what got them there, and use taxpayers funds like it's their own piggy bank.

   Barry Bonds lied under oath, for that, he will probably pay dearly -- as well he should. What I'm saying though is that the whole investigation by the government should never had started. The money could have been put to better use.

Friends Dinner:

Welcome To NY --Empty Your Pockets Please :

   An interesting bill is being introduced by Queens Assemblyman Michael DenDekker. It would mandate registration- similar to a motor vehicle- for every bicycle in the state, complete with license plates hanging from the rear of the seat. Another separate measure is also being introduced which would force every commercial cyclist in the state to carry identification, and to have insurance. Of course, there is an initial $25 fee for the first year, and $5 each additional year for recreational cyclist -- with a $50 fee for commercial cyclist, plus the cost of insurance.
   One part of me says, damn them -- another tax, and another way for them to keep track of us and what we're doing. 1984 anyone! But looking at the fee for commercial cyclist I say -- why not? It make sense, especially for the metro NY area, with the high volume of commercial cyclist there. If you read the Post or Daily News on a regular basis, you always see stories of accidents between motor vehicles and bike messengers. Now the motor vehicle owner is mandated to carry liability insurance, register & have their vehicle inspected on a regular basis in NY State to operate his vehicle on public roads. Not to mention the pick pocketing fee's and taxes that commercial truckers must pay. Commercial cyclist use the same roads to earn a living -- so why does one have to pay, the other gets off for free, and is not mandated to carry insurance? Bike runs through a red light and smashes into your car -- you pay for the damage. Get what I'm saying here?
   As far as imposing a fee on recreational bikes. What are they going to do -- have cops pull over a 10 year old for not having plates? Please! This is totally insane. But it is NY State, and I guess we should be used to it by now. I can see it now, cops writing tickets to a crying kid, who parents may not have had the extra $25 to register the bike. Or maybe a sticker check/road block on the Lansingburgh Bike Trail. Where does this nonsense end? Will parents using non-disposable diapers be taxed for the release of excess Methane gas into the atmosphere, with parents using a non landfill friendly disposable diaper gaining a tax credit for containing the gas in plastic? Tax, after tax, after tax. Just once I'd like to see one of these state elected officials come up with an original idea to generate revenue from some place else other then the money tree they must think we all grow in our back yards. Not a peep from any of them over the sharp increase in gas prices -- but since more people are using their bikes as transportation due to the high gas prices, politicians figure that they'll need to make up the revenue from somewhere -- and we are their favorite well to dip into, aren't we?
   Write a letter to your local assemblyman and ask him to vote no on this bill. Tell him you're a bike rider, and as long as you're not breaking any laws -- it's none of their damn business, so stop trying to pick my pocket!

My Dinner With Rob Gregor:

   A few years ago there was a candidate for Troy City Council named Rob Gregor. Now even though we were on completely different sides of the political isle, we became fast friends. After his council run, Rob became Co-Chairman of the Troy City Democratic party. He had some very fresh and exciting idea's, and had the ability to put politics aside, in order to just get the job done -- a concept that seems to be on the wrong side of extinction.
   Now Rob is a very bright guy, and he all of a sudden decided he wanted to get a law degree, and begin a practice. After graduation, he went to work for the US Attorneys Office in Manhattan. Now Rob already had a degree in Hotel Management, and one day decided he would like to go to work in this field. So he packed up his things and bought a beautiful hotel in Kingfield Maine - the Herbert Grand, which he's operated with his lovely bride over the past 3 years.
   He gave me a call a couple of weeks ago to tell me he was going to be in town, and we wound up getting together and having dinner at Dinosuar. Rob told me he was in the process of closing on a hotel in Lake George, with the intent of purchasing a few more at the Summer vacation mecca.
I'm thrilled that my friend is doing so well for himself, and I'm extremely happy that he's found a beautiful wife to share the journey with him. I was so happy, I let him buy dinner that night also!
   I really wish he was still involved with Troy politics though. Rob was an open minded type of politico, who was interested in only the bottom line -- helping the residents of Troy. He was, and is a bi-partisan type who's only concern was doing the right thing for the people. To bad he's moved on -- he would have been a great candidate for this years mayors race. Some of the jokers we have around here in political office, and who have thrown their names into the hat for the mayors race, always tell you what a great job they're doing, and how transparent they are going to be. But it's nonsense & hot air in most cases. Just look at the ongoing Voter Fraud debacle. How in God's name can any person who's involved with that despicable case, even think about putting their name out there to lead our city? I hope people see through the smoke screen. It's just ridiculous.
   Rob asked me to send his best to all of his friends here. He misses Troy, and was the kind of guy that you hate to see leave.I wish my friend well with his new endeavour, and I'm sure I'll be seeing much more of him this coming summer season. I'll have more on Rob's new business venture in the near future.

Goodby John McLoughlin:

   I've lived in the Capital District for 51 of my 54 years on this Earth. There's many things which make our region unique, and in ways special. If you've lived here for a long period of time, you know who Nipper the RCA dog is, and where his perch was. You know where the best Italian restaurant is, and what car wash doesn't scratch your car. Local television personalities are like members of your family, with many of the local guy's and gal's in the business hanging around for many years -- the good one's at least.
   You tend to remember certain personalities like Rip Rowen, Bob MacNamara, Ed Dague, & Dick Wood. People you watched for many years. People who came into your kitchen or living room, every night at 6 & 11. One of the most recognizable in my life just signed off last night on WTEN. South Troy boy John McLoughlin said goodbye to viewers, viewers who knew and enjoyed his fine work over the years. He was a constant, an Irish uncle, a jokester, a face we came to know and trust.
   Now I don't know what led to John leaving a job, that many of us thought he would do forever. Did he leave voluntarily, was he pushed out? -- nobody knows for sure. If he was pushed out -- shame on WTEN, and I'd say it was a poor decision on their part. There's a lot to be said for continuity on local newscast. When you watched WTEN news at 6, John was always the guy with the BIG story. A professional journalist who always knew the correct time to throw a joke or two into his report, and when to play it straight. John was, and is a pro. I'll miss his style, wit, and professionalism, and will be looking forward to seeing him at the upcoming, Friends of 112th St. annual dinner on Feb 26.
   I watched his final broadcast last night, and I was appalled at the sign off they gave him -- a 60 second retrospect highlighting some of his reports. For a man who garners much more respect than some of the suits at WTEN who made this decision ever will, I thought there should have been more. Why not a 30 minute special show highlighting his life and career. He deserves it, and I think it would generate very high ratings for WTEN. He was highly respected by all who ever knew him or worked with him, a fact that seems to have been forgotten by his employers.
   Good luck to John in this, the next chapter in his life --- and GOOD luck to WTEN trying to replace him.

   If your bored with being shut in the house, bowling is a great way to beat the doldrums of a long winter. Here in the 'Burgh, Alpha Lanes offers some very family friendly activities, and prices. Lansingburgh High School's boy & girls bowling teams use Alpha as it's home turf, with the establishment offering reduced prices for Youth Bowling on Saturday mornings. They also work with the Boys & Girls Club, participating in an after school program for kids to bowl, along with offering discount coupons for kids while they are on the many breaks they receive during the school year. Family coupons are also made available online. Owner Joe Scaccia has a HUGE heart when it comes to raising money for a worthwhile effort. There's been so many fundraisers that I've seen in my 21 years living in this community, I couldn't possibly list all of them -- there's not enough space! Alpha also has leagues going every night of the week, and offer a special, Casino Ladies Night on Wednesdays. They have a full snack bar with great pizza, along with a variety of fine beverages, with OTB Easy Bet available right there.

   Bowling is as American as apple pie, so be a Patriot and support your local Alpha Lanes. Keep your money local.

What to do in the Burgh on New Years Eve:

Why would anyone travel on New Years Eve, when there's plenty of great specials right here in the 'Burgh you can take advantage of. Take your pick from deals being offered at, Trader Ed's, Renahan's, Pip's II, Badass Burrito, and the all new, Mustang Bar B Que. Don't forget the old mainstays like, Verdile's & Testo's either. If it's lighter fare your looking for, try Jimmy's, Anthony's Pizza, Sunny Wok, Spring Garden, Mr. Subb, or Subway.
Basically what I'm saying here is to try and keep your dollars local this year. The more we can spend our money locally, the better of a chance your local business will thrive and survive. Plus, if you enjoy having a few drinks, most of these places are within walking distance of your home, if you live in the 'Burgh. Why take the chance of driving if you're planning on having a few drinks? Stay close to home, and keep your dollars local.

It's Merry Christmas - Not Happy Holiday:

   Merry Christmas -- there, I've said it. It this offends you -- go to the next Blog. On Christmas, Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. This is our belief. Why should we be denied the expression of our faith?What gives anyone the right to sue a city for displaying a Nativity scene at Christmas? What gives the parent of one child, the right to deny an entire school class a Christmas party because it offends them? Well you know what, we the taxpaying public are tired of being told what is the right way to say something, what to worship, and what we are even allowed to eat. Every time you open a newspaper you see more and more, that we are being led down the path to being a Socialistic country.
   The words, In God We Trust, on our currency is even being attacked these days. Don't these people have anything better to do? With the number of homeless people rising everyday, our tax dollars are being wasted on doing studies on the effects of trans fats / and how to ban them., along with studies on how to make school lunch's healthier --- Leave the canolli, take the carrots, so to speak. Every time you turn around, the Liberal left is trying to cram more regulation, and basic denial of our Civil Rights down our throats.
   I'd like to see just one of our elected officials grow a set and say, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! Stop cowering down to these special interest groups, and do the right thing for the people you represent. One by one, our basic liberties are being taken away. Our lives are regulated to the bursting point. Recently, a city council member of a town in Long Island, had two 12 year old's ticketed, for selling lemon-aid and cookies in a public park without a permit. The kids were trying to get some pocket cash for God's sake. They should have gave these kids an award for trying to earn their own money. But this council fool wanted them to obtain a permit -- for $500.
   What I'd like to see in the upcoming year is our powers that be, our courts, and just people in general, use a more common sense approach to things. I'd like to see some of the burden taken off the backs of the taxpayers we have left. I'd like to see people, and public officials be able to say the word, God, without some self righteous fool suing cause it offends them. If this posting offends you -- too bad! Like I said -- move on to the next Blog then. The United States Constitution also guarantee's ME the taxpayer, the right to speak my mind, without the threat of retribution. I have a voice, and I intend to use it. Many feel the same as I do, that the world is upside down. It's time for us, the taxpayers, to have a real voice again.

Sometimes we tend to forget what is important during the holiday season. Everyone gets so worked up over what they need to buy, and where to buy it. Sometimes, we need to reflect on what really is important, and what truly makes us happy. I know what I'm thankful for this year. But I was curious as to what my co-workers in the City of Troy's Department of Parks & Recreation are thankful for. Here's what they said:
Vinny - "I'm thankful for having a job in this economy."
Fudd -- "I'm thankful that we have 'Super Hero's to keep us safe."
Sean -- " I'm thankful for having a beautiful , healthy baby girl, and a wife who puts up with me."

Christian - "Friends, family & the opportunity to get a good education."
George -- "I'm thankful that the Dodgers hired Don Mattingly" -- and for Vito".

Support Your Local Restaurants This Christmas Season:

   If you are having a party, or just going out to dinner this Christmas Season, the city of Troy offers so many different, and diverse restaurants, it would be a shame to see our residents taking their dollars across the river. With so many local eateries struggling to stay afloat, it's in everyone's best interest to spend your money close to home. In Lansingburgh for instance, some new establishments have opened, or reopened recently.
Renahans (the former Olde Daley Inn, 499 House, Mahoney's, Mj's) recently reopened, as has Pips II. Both of these long time 'Burgh mainstays are under new ownership, and need our support to thrive and survive.
   With all the hoopla recently regarding the new Dinosaur Bar B Que -- which has fantastic food by the way, other restaurants in Troy have seemed to have gotten lost in the shuffle. Another bar b que place will soon be opening in the 'Burgh. Mustang Smokehouse Bar B Que is located on the corner of 5th, and 112th St., should open it's doors before Christmas. That entire 112th St. area will now offer more choices for hungry people. Between Graham's Lansingburgh Cafe, Jimmy's Pizza, Mustang, Badass Buritto, and Pip's, you can pretty much get any type of food you desire, all within a one block radius. Renehans on 2nd Ave, and a few blocks to the North with Verdile's gives you even more choices. Testo's is still thriving at it's 4th Ave local, with Sunny Wok just a block away to the East.
   Downtown is filled with fine eateries. Nothing too expensive, just fine restaurants, run by local people. From LoPorto's to Minnesales on 14th St. the quality of the food is just so good, I see no reason to cross the river to spend any expendable income I may have. Keep it home folks. If not, who's to blame when another business shuts it's doors. I ask everyone reading this to think twice before you go outside the box for dinner, or lunch --- or breakfast.
   Many of our restaurants are also capable of providing space for your private party. Plus, let's not forget Michael Cocca's, Franklin Plaza, and Franklin Terrace -- both great spots to host any type of occasion.
So I'm asking people to follow my lead, and make a commitment to your community by supporting your Troy businesses this holiday season. If you're planning on dining out once or twice before the holiday's, please make that choice to dine, at any of Troy's fine establishments. I, and my family will be doing just that..

Turkey Trot Tomorrow Morning:

   Tomorrow will mark the 63rd running of the Troy Turkey Trot. As of early this afternoon, more than 7100 runners had registered to run, breaking all previous records of participation. I'm not sure what the final tally is, but based on the way the late registrants were coming in, I'm sure there will be several hundred more athletes signing up, than the number I am reporting here.
Besides the attraction of the race itself, street entertainers will be performing at the Turkey Trot for the first time. Guitarist, Maurizio Russamano, along with, Donny Elvis will entertain the crowd inside the Atrium. Outside revelers will be dazzled and amazed by Freckles the Clown, Juggler Mike and his Unicycle, along with seasonal crowd favorite, Sax A Claus.
   Since I don't run, but I like to eat, please join me tomorrow for my own personal leg of the trot that I call, "The Half Block Challenge". I'll be starting at Famous Lunch to eat a dozen dogs, with a large chocolate milk, and a rice pudding. From there, we go to, I Love NY Pizza, for two slices and a coke. After which, we will then take a leisurely walk to the Atrium Parking Garage to watch the runners. We'll be meeting inside the Atrium at 8 a.m. to kick off, what I think will become an annual tradition.
   Make sure you get there early for a good parking spot though, as the event traditionally draws many thousands to cheer on their own personal favorite runners. So join us for the fun and entertainment on Thanksgiving morning. And most of all, Enjoy Troy!

The Lansingburgh Boys & Girls Club will be holding it's 2nd Annual Boy's Club Alumni Reunion on Friday, November 26, from 5 p.m. till ?????????
Price of admission is $25, which includes beer, wine, water, coffee, food, and deserts. Last year, 115 former members of the club came out to reminisce, and relive the tall tales of their youth. The group enjoyed card games, a 9 Ball pool tournament, and ping pong during last years event. This year promises more of the same. Organizers are hoping to double the number of former members attending this year. All proceeds will directly benefit the club.

Tony Perinno, who has worked with many of the best known names in the music industry, recently had some serious surgery. His medical bills are astronomical, so the Godfather of local guitarist, Joe Mele went to bat for his good friend, and put this together. It's being held at Jay's Bar & Grill in Saratoga. Cost is $10, to hear some of the finest rock n roll bands in the Northeast.

Nanny politics seem to be running rampant these days. The government is hell bent on strangling us with taxes and regulations, and now they want to tell us what's good for us and what to eat. The Trans-fat ban is a sad example of this. I know they are not good for you, but come on, who's life is it anyway? I admire the fight of Rachel Cocca Dott against Albany County's ban on the fat. The government has absolutely no right to do any of this. It is pure and simple, Socialism. -- which is in itself, Communism!
There seems to be a growing trend among politicians, to try to take away not just some, but ALL of our civil liberties. It's bad enough that they tax EVERYTHING, now they want to tell us what and how to eat. I say it's none of their damn business! They continue to pick our pockets, and then around election time tell us what a great job they're doing. Look at Obama's health care program. What gets me is that people who can afford, 'Cadillac', health care plans, will be taxed because of it. Break this down for a moment. You purchase your health care with money that you've gone out and worked for, and that money is taxed. Now the money that has already been taxed, will be taxed again with your purchase of health insurance. Makes no sense if you ask me.
But now with the door open, and nut cases like Mayor Bloomberg in New York City doing everything they can to control peoples lives, we've got to put an end to all of it. We need politicians once again who work for us. Many take the attitude that they know best. To hell with them I say. We need to make some wholesale changes with the people who were elected to do what's best for us. This current group who sit in office need to go. I hope people do what's necessary next Tuesday to help get us back on the right track.
The ban on Trans Fat is plain and simple -- Unconstitutional. Whats next, will they tell us that all toilet paper must be one ply to cut down on sewage build up? Or maybe they'll say we can only wear cotton clothing, because it will break down easier than rayon, or microfiber, once it's thrown away.. I know this seems absurd, but I think the government telling you what and how to eat is nothing but a Big Brother attemp to further control our lives. Someone should read the Constitution & Bill of Rights once in a while.

This is one of the reasons why Troy has become a laughing stock once again. Blocks being taken over by gangs, poverty, staggering unemployment, kids out of control -- but no -- we're worrying about who can post on Facebook.

Big Game For The Knights:

The Lansingburgh Knights will put their stellar season on the line Friday night, with a rematch against Bishop Maginn at home. It seems this team is always chuck full of talent. But with that talent comes the intangible -- heart. Part of that mentality comes from the players desire, the rest, comes from the fine coaching the team seems to have year after year.
Head coach, Al McNall is a bulldog, pure and simple. He is a no nonsense guy, who possesses natural motivational skills, and does a great job in getting his team up for the challenges presented to them on a week to week basis.
This team just seems to beat down their opponents will to win with their always explosive offense, and bone crushing, take no prisoners defense. My kudos, and best wishes go out to all the boys, and the fine coaching staff. Bring home the championship fellas -- our community is pulling for you.

My Thoughts On City Hall:

For quite a while, I've been sitting back listening to all the nonsense going on regarding where city hall should be located. There's been many suggestions including the Proctors, Daisy Bakers, and the Monument Square location. I say, keep it where it is at the former Verizon building.
Having worked in the old city hall, I can tell you first hand that the place was a dump. The molds that have built up over the years are bordering on dangerous. I developed allergies for the first time in my life after working there for a while. Funny how those same allergies mysteriously went away after moving to the new site. When it rained excessively, employee's were sometimes treated to an extra shower in the elevator, along with being able to watch the water run down the walls of the 3rd floor. Then there was the adventure which was the now closed employee parking lot. It was always fun sprinting to the elevator to avoid the falling concrete, which always fell when there was an abundance of rain. Re-bar sticking out from the deteriorating concrete roof was always another source of concern.
Being I was involved in the concrete business for much of my life, I can tell you that the vertical cracks in the foundation pose a very serious safety concern. I remember watching the building being built with my father (who was in the concrete business his entire life) back in the early 70's, and he told me that, "This building will never last. They're using the cheapest concrete they can, and it will never cure properly next to the river. It will start to fall apart within 20 years." My dad knew his concrete, and boy was he correct!
What I've described is just the tip of the iceberg of what was wrong with that building, but it is only my personal opinion after spending 6 years working there. I know many other employee's who feel the same way. What really kills me though, is that some of the same people who used to complain that city hall was an, architectural nightmare that did not conform to the existing buildings in the immediate area, are some of the same hypocrite's who are calling to move back to that disaster waiting to happen.

Sept 4 will mark the final show of the 2010 Powers Park Concert Series. Cop Rock group, 3-Four-3, will take to the Neil Kelleher Stage at 6 p.m. for the grand finale of the summer season.

The group has opened shows for a number of national acts, and has a large local following. Two of its members (Bassist/singer Tom Hoffman & Drummer Steve Seney) are both Troy Police officers who moonlight as rock n roll musicians -- and do a fantastic job at it! They play a wide variety of top ten hits as well as their own, original tunes. Their performance will mark their first appearance at the Historic park, and promise to be a real crowd pleaser. It's been one incredible summer season here in Troy. Troy Night Out party, the last Friday of each month runs throughout the year, under the guidance and direction of Elizabeth Young of the Troy Downtown Business Collaborative-- working in tandem with the city administration. It's a great thing to see Troy alive, for all the right reasons, with good people enjoying our business district - just like the good old days. Music filling the streets, with happy shop owners servicing consistent crowds of shoppers, and window shoppers. My kudos go out to Elizabeth, along with her co-workers and staff for the great job and badly needed infusion of fresh ideas and energy, in helping to revitalize the downtown area.

River St. Festival, held in June was once again a wonderful celebration of food, art, and diverse music. More than 10 thousand attended this years event, which seems to be growing larger every year. Another fine collaboration between the city and the Troy DBC.

Troy Pig Out was just completely OFF THE CHARTS! More than 30,000 carnivores came, ate, and partied at this event. Great music and wonderful food over two days.

Rockin on the River is another idea which has grown to huge proportions. Every Wednesday evening throughout the summer, had thousands of music fans (who might not otherwise come to Troy) jamming the bars and restaurants, up and down River St.

Say what you want about our Troy city events. Knock them, try to find fault with them, but the bottom line is this -- people are starting to see our city as a destination now. Their dollars are coming to our city, benefiting our merchants, and to find something to rag on regarding them, is just petty and immature. I'm proud to be a part of them.

This ain't no joke - Powers Park has Solid Smoke. The legendary funk meisters come to the Neil Kelleher Stage at the Historic Lansingburgh park tonight for a 6:00 p.m. performance. To say that this band is just good, would be falling way short of the mark. This is truly an amazing group of musicians, who play with determination and zeal. Their soulful renditions of R&B classics, along with Motown hits, just have a way of bringing back fond memories to anyone who grew up in that era.

When Solid Smoke breaks out the funk, just stand back and let the groove take over. Last year after opening for Eddie Money in downtown Troy, Money's road manager came over to me and just said, "Wow -- these guys are great. Get your dancing shoes on for tonight's show at Powers Park. The super energized school teacher group, Four, makes it's way to the Neil Kelleher Stage at the Historic park for the first time -- at least in this form. You see, a couple of these excellent musicians used to be with one of the bands who helped put the popular concert series over the top in the early years, Vehicle. They were an 8 piece, horn fueled powerhouse of sound, who drew HUGE crowds to their show, due to the fact that they were a great band, and had two of their members who taught at Lansingburgh schools. With this four piece ensemble, three of their members teach in the North end school district.

Their incredible front man/ singer, Alejandro Williams - AKA Jack the Poet - is like an nuclear energy source when gets on stage. He's one of the best I've ever seen in this area in my 40 years around the local music scene. Most of the group are St. Rose graduates -- all are amazing musicians. Troy was really hopping this weekend. The third annual Troy Pig Out seemed to be more popular than ever, even in the stifling heat. Kudos to Elizabeth Young for the fantastic job she did in coordinating the event. It's hard to believe that Mayor Tutunjian' idea has grown into this Fucillo HUGE food fest, which brought thousands of people into our fine city.
Powers Park was also filled to capacity on Saturday, for the Al Bruno Oldies Show. It's a beautiful thing seeing all the people coming to Troy for our festivals and concerts. I've heard people in the past actually criticise the mayor for these events. All I can say is that if the detractors can show me another way of getting thousands of people here to spend their hard earned dollars, well, I'm all ears.
Don't forget, Wednesday night at Rockin on the River will feature a performance by Blues master, Albert Cummings. Showtime is 5:30 p.m. Blue Hand Luke will headline the Powers Park Concerts on Saturday, July 24. Korean War Not Forgotten:

The month of June marked the 60th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War, a three-year conflict that claimed a million lives, 36,000 of them American. Dubbed, "The Forgotten War" - many military historians focus more on the Civil War, WW II, and Viet Nam. But Korea had one battle which will never be forgotten: The Chosin Reservoir Campaign.

In the winter of 1950. the 12,000 Marines and 3,000 Soldiers of the 1st Marine Division were surrounded by 120,000 Chinese soldiers at the Chosin Reservoir. Trapped 78 miles behind enemy lines and being battered by sub-zero temperatures, the American troops fought their way out, taking their dead and wounded with them.
As the soldiers reached the coastline, 98,000 desperate civilians followed them in a frantic attempt to escape the Communist rule in North Korea. Our brave Marines, soldiers and sailors volunteered to stay for three more days, under fire, until all of the refugees were loaded onto ships and brought safely to South Korea.
A total of 17 Medals of Honor, 73 Navy Crosses, and 23 Distinguished Service Crosses were awarded for the heroic actions of the American soldiers. Chosin became one of the most decorated battles in American history.

There's not many of these American hero's left. Many still carry the memories, and the horrors of war. You see them at parades, and at war memorials, still proudly wearing their uniforms. If you see one of them, tip your cap to these brave men, and thank them for their service to our country. God Bless America!

Really Stupid Politician Tricks:

Sometimes you see politicians doing some very moronic things. Then there are times when they just seem to push the envelope of stupidity even further.
In case you haven't heard, a couple of NY State assemblymen are proposing a new law, which may be, in my opinion, a death sentence for police officers in New York.
Assembly Bill, A02952, which reads in part, "A police officer or peace officer...uses such force with the intent to stop, rather than kill...and uses only the minimal amount of force necessary to effect such stop." What? I can see it now, an officer in pursuit of an armed suspect who has just committed a felony, gets the drop on the suspect and says, "stop or I'll shoot you in the fleshy part of your arm!"
The current law in place, state Penal Law, S 35.15(2)(a)(ii), reads, "A person may not use deadly physical force upon another person...unless:he or she is... a police officer or peace officer or a person assisting a police or peace officer at the latter's direction."

If you follow state politics you may remember that when Gov. Patterson was a member of the state senate, he tried for 6 years to get a similar bill passed. Well, it was a bad idea then, as it's a bad idea now. What's next, taking away a police officers gun and replacing it with a sling shot? The bill would force officers to use their weapons with the intent to stop, rather than kill a suspect. They would be mandated to shoot a suspect in the arm or leg. Cops are taught to shoot at the center of their target and fire their weapon until the threat has been stopped.
You can reasonably assume that a police officer in the line of fire would have to make a full assessment of a dangerous situation in a fraction of a second. Why should that officer have to worry about where he shoots the suspect? The criminal is probably not worrying where he shoots the cop, if he has a family, or how his children will be effected by their fathers death.
He's shooting at the cop to KILL him -- not just to wound him. With the fire power available to some of these low life's, as far as I'm concerned, give the police officers a bazooka a few hand grenades to lob at them. Their rights go right out the window once they start opening fire on the cops and law abiding public.

I've seen what the Troy PD is up against on the streets of our city. I've seen suspects spit on cops, take a swing at an officer, and lead them on crazy chases which endanger the citizens of our city. Some of these animals have no regard for human life. Letting this moronic bill even go to the Assembly floor for a vote is like placing a death sentence on any man or woman who is brave enough to wear the uniform. Take the time and write a letter of protest to the Assembly members behind the nonsense, Annette Robinson (D-Bedford Stuyvesant), and Darryl Towns (D- East New York), and let them know that you, as a taxpaying citizen, do not want to see the brave men and women who protect us, die in the line of duty -- just to protect the so called rights of the criminal. To hell with their rights - they lost them the minute they picked up the illegal firearm.

In case you hadn't noticed, Freihofer's has reopened their outlet discount store in the 'Burgh. I ask, "WHY THE HECK DID THEY LEAVE IN THE FIRST PLACE? When they left the 'Burgh 5 years ago, I refused to buy ANY Freihofer product I was so mad. I just could never understand the marketing strategy that prompted them to move from the community where the whole thing started. The outlet store enabled families to purchase multiple products, without breaking the bank. The move out of the 'Burgh, just stunk in my opinion.
But now that they're back, I've once again begun purchasing their fine products, at a greatly reduced price I might add. Their outlet store is located in the 2nd Ave. strip mall which also houses Dunkin Doughnuts, and multiple other businesses.

I had a Pulse of the People letter published in this paper this past Saturday, May 8th, that was missing a couple of things.
* I failed to mention a very nice gesture on Mayor Tutunjian's part. You see, a good number of our chocolate bunnies melted prior to the Easter egg hunt. The mayor replaced, out of his own pocket, the melted bunnies, with an entire case of new ones. It was done without any fan fare, and was truly a gesture straight from the heart. Thanks Harry!
* I also failed to mention my son Vito III, who wore the bunny suit in some very intense heat. My boy fully realizes at an early age the importance of giving back to your community. He's a great kid who is always a big help at the many special events I'm involved in within the city. Special thanks goes out to both Harry & Vito III, and my apologies to them both for the oversight in my recent letter to the editor.

If true ambition is a dream with a V8 engine, then Lansingburgh High School was the Daytona 500 the past two weeks with the 'Lansingburgh Has Talent' competition taking place.
To say the competitors were a driven bunch, would be an understatement to say the least. The students who participated took the contest very seriously. I know from my four decades in the music business that in order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure. There's always bumps in the road, and a few roadblocks along the way. But these students who participated were warriors in my opinion.

The eleven contestants who began the contest, were whittled down to the final four who competed this past Friday. Each of the finalist performed two songs each with an undeniable passion to succeed. Their hard work and desire was evident in each of their performances. The judges had an extremely hard time picking the winner, and the final voting tally was extremely close.

*First Runner Up: Joe & Arden Yonkers

The Sky is Falling -- No It's Not:

Last Wednesday I received phone calls from some very upset residents of the 'Burgh. It seems Councilman Kevin McGrath announced to the crowd at the North Lansingburgh Neighborhood Group monthly meeting, that Community Policing would be a dead duck if acting police chief John Tedesco was appointed to the position full time. Nothing my friends could be further from the truth.
Having worked with John, when he was in charge of the community police, I knew his dedication and belief in the unit, would not let this happen. He will be in fact, appointed to the position any day now. I took the opportunity a few days ago to get together with the new chief to see what was up.
John told me point blank that this particular rumor was nothing but that -- a rumor. Community policing is as strong as ever, and will continue to grow and flourish under the new chief. Just go to any neighborhood meeting, and you'll find a community police officer there, helping eliminate any problem that may be brought up by concerned residents

As a community activist, I worked very closely with him and that department more than a decade ago. With his help and guidance, my Better 'Burgh Club was honored with the NY State Attorney Generals Award of Excellence in 2003. No one was a stronger advocate than John regarding the policing unit. He assured me, that it will continue to be an active force within our neighborhoods. Knowing John since we both attended St. Mary's school in the 60's, and based on my working very closely with him over the years on a multitude of issues,,I have no reason not to believe him.

So if someone tells you that Community Policing under the new chief is done, please just refer them to this Blog. The sky is not falling.

Lansingburgh Has Talent-Round 1:

The first round has been completed in the Lansingburgh Has Talent competition. Four finalist were selected by the panel of judges, to compete in the finals, being held this coming Friday, April 23, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
All the students competing were very talented, and all put on wonderful performances. The judges, Ralph Renna of Capital Underground radio, and television, Mike the Enforcer of Albany Broadcasting, and J Will, of the J Will Jamboree on JAMZ radio, were very blunt and direct of each contestants performance. It was a shame that there were only four finalist, as each and every student, gave their all.

Making it to the final round was, DJ Lennon, Jenna Rowe, Vincent Gregnano & Britney Johnson, and Joe & Arden Yonkers. All showed talent, plus unique showmanship, not readily seen in entertainers of this age. Each of the youths will be performing two songs each this week for the finals.

Join us this Friday for the grand finale. You will not be disappointed!

Talent Contest Comes to the 'Burgh:

If you're looking for something to do tonight, join us at Lansingburgh High School for the first edition of, 'Lansingburgh Has Talent'. The event will showcase some of the hidden musical talent that sometimes goes unnoticed for a variety of reasons. Parents are always complaining that there is not enough constructive activities for their kids. This will provide a constructive, and positive activity that any parent would be proud to have their child compete in.
Jim Gordon of the North Lansingburgh Neighborhood Watch and I have worked with the Lansingburgh School District over the past 2 months to put this event together. We're hoping for a large turnout for tonight's competition.
Local radio and television personalities, Ralph Renna, Mike the Enforcer, and J Will Jamboree will serve as celebrity judges. The second round of the event will take place on Friday, April 23, at 6 p.m. The winner, will be given a chance to perform at Troy's, River St. Arts Festival on June 19.
The competition begins at 6 p.m. tonight, and admission is free. Join us tonight and let's see how much talent Lansingburgh High School has!

Hail To The Chief:

Chief Nick Kaiser retired from the Troy PD last month after 35 years on the force. He was a good cop, smart detective, and a fine leader of our police force. Nick attended Better 'Burgh Club meetings, and listened to people's concerns and fears. He paid attention, and did what he could to make things better. His compassion for people was admirable, and dedication to the community where he lived, was greatly appreciated by all.

The chief enjoyed riding his Harley, and was a fine musician who once opened a show at SPAC. I always enjoyed speaking with him about any topic, although we would always wind up talking music, or problems around the 'Burgh. We had our differences over issues throughout his years as chief, but I like to think there was always a mutual respect between us. I sincerely wish him well in his upcoming, sun baked golden years. Hail Kaiser!

Mayor Tutunjian has got a very big decision to make in the near future picking Chief Kaiser's replacement. All three candidates, John Tedesco, Tony Magnetto, and Buddy McAvoy, who placed the highest scores on the most recent Civil Service test for the position, are all long time Troy police officers with exemplary records. All are fine men, and strong leaders.

Assistant Chief Tedesco is currently heading up the force, and I wish him the best of luck with his new position. He was the guru of many community groups when he headed up Troy's Community Policing unit a decade ago, and was always very accessible to our groups. He did a great deal to help many of our neighborhood associations prosper, flourish, and always rectified any problem our groups encountered. Good luck to the acting chief!

The mayor can't make a bad decision from this group of candidates. From any community activist, or citizen standpoint, that can only mean good things for our future.

Easter Bunny Spotted Hopping To Lansingburgh:

The Easter Bunny has been spotted by many drivers on the Northway according to reports which have been coming in all morning. According to his press agent, Mr. Easter Bunny will be arriving at Powers Park on Saturday, April 3. His ETA is 12 p.m.
The iconic Mr. Bunny has long been a favorite of children worldwide, and will be making his only scheduled appearance in the Capital District with his stop in Lansingburgh.

The annual Egg Hunt at Powers Park is now in it's 5th year, and has become a much anticipated event for the children within the community. More than 2,500 plastic Easter eggs will be hidden in and around Powers Park this year. Organizers of the event have promised that every child will leave with candy. Gift certificates from both Stewart's Shops & Snowman will also be hidden around the park. Children ages, 1-12 are invited to attend.

Powers Park is located on Second Ave at 110th St. Google map at 420 Second Ave for directions. The annual event begins at 12 p.m. tomorrow.

Earth Day Informational Meeting Tonight:

On Monday, March 29, beginning at 6:30 p.m., the city of Troy will be hosting an informational meeting for all who plan on participating in the annual city wide Earth Day cleanup. I don't have a clue as to what you could possibly compare Famous Lunch to. I first went to Famous with my father back in the early 60's. Apparently stuck in time, the decor has just never changed. But that's OK. Cause the prices haven't changed all that much either. The people who frequent the hot dog emporium on a day to day basis, are all quite the characters. You can get more laughs in there than you can from watching an HBO comedy special. Many of the faces have not changed too much over the years, that have just gotten a bit older.
At the Famous Lunch, you don't go in for the ambiance, that's for sure. What you do get is a very reasonable priced meal, the best dogs and sauce, plus the homemade rice pudding.

Scotty Vasilades has kept the tradition going at one of Troy's oldest running establishments. I remember as a kid watching Scott's, Uncle Nick balance the hot dogs on his arm. If they did that in today's world though, the health department would be closing in on them in minutes. Back then, we didn't care, and I never remember getting sick either. The point I'm trying to make here is that don't be fooled by the wrapping paper. Famous Lunch is one of the best deals in town. truly a Troy Treasure!

Friends Dinner Postscript:

Another Friends of 112th St. dinner has once again passed us by. But not without some memorable moments, many of which I cannot write about on this Blog. I always use the dinner to take the time to speak with old friends that I do not see very often, and avoid some of the one's that I see all too often!
The skits were hilarious, and the banter from the dais was brutal. Sen. Roy McDonald was the well deserved recipient of the Man of the Year award. When it was announced, I had to laugh because the room suddenly looked like the US Congress. Everyone gave Roy a standing ovation, except for those there on the opposite end of the political isle. Tom Fox received a map as an award -- a map to guide him home to be precise! Everyone gave Jim Lance a hard time. But he got up there and had the crowd rolling in laughter. But then, his Estrogen must have kicked in and he became much like Sally Struthers on an infomercial.
Poor Tucker Hulihan didn't know what to make of Lance's meltdown, and became even more confused than normal.
I was sad to see that Bob Mirch didn't make it up from Florida for this years event, due to the fact that he is teaching sensitivity classes somewhere near Alligator Alley in the sunshine state.
Overall it was a wonderful evening, and I wish I could repeat some of the remarks which came out of the mouths of Channel 10's, John McGloughlin, Talk1300's Paul Vandenburgh, and Neil Kelleher -- but if I did, I'd probably be barred from next years dinner.

Ted's Fish Fry:

You can always tell when we Catholics are celebrating Lent, by the over full parking lot at Ted's Fish Fry on 2nd Ave. Ted's has been in operation in the 'Burgh since the mid 1960's. Catholics flock to this established eatery, for some of the best fish fry around, every Friday during Lent.
I've been patronizing this establishment for more than 4 decades now, and can honestly say they are always consistent with their food. The amazing thing to me though, is the fact that their prices are still reasonable after all these years. The Deeb family has always treated their customers well, and with respect.
Whether you're a Catholic or not, stop up at Ted's, and you'll see what I mean.

Badass Burrito has been a welcome addition to Lansingburgh since opening its doors 2 years ago. Mike Olekowski & Howie Yager have provided the community with some much needed variation from the good Italian food found in the 'Burgh. My personal favorite are the Badass Fries, which is some sort of Mexican fruit, or veggie, that is sliced waffle style, and fried. It has a very distinct flavor, which has addicted my son Vito & I.

Badass recently obtained their NY State Liquor License. So now, you can enjoy a cold frosty brew, or a frozen margarita, or martini with your meal. Plus, the Badass boys are now offering live music & Wii games. Here's a look at what's going on.

Sax a Claus:

Here's something that just caught my attention in Downtown Troy on Christmas Eve, that I thought was fabulous. My family and I attended 4 p.m. mass at St. Anthony's church. Father Mario Julian said a beautiful mass, which was attended by more people than I've ever seen at the church. We had parked about a block and a half away, up by the Atrium, so we had the chance to enjoy a walk through downtown, on a beautiful evening.
All of a sudden, we were pleasantly surprised to see Santa Claus walking down the street, playing Christmas music on his saxophone. We stopped, and were treated to a private concert on 4th Street. the entire experience made me close my eye's and remember the hustle and bustle of Troy's downtown during a different era, when events like this were common during the holiday season. The musical Santa goes by the moniker, Sax a Claus. I know it was just a little thing, but, it was just one of those special events that makes the holiday's so unique, and memorable.
Sax a Claus was just walking in and out of different bars, shops and restaurants, playing for the delighted patrons. He wasn't being payed by anyone, nor was he accepting tips for his time and effort. I asked him why he was out there and he replied, "I was blessed with talent, and I think during Christmas time, it's my obligation to share that talent to help brighten people's lives, and maybe enhance someones holiday season."

People like Sax a Claus, give you hope that there are still people out there who care, and perform acts of kindness, just to help make others happy. If everyone did just one thing to help another human being, our city would be a much happier, and healthier place.

The holiday season always seems to bring out the best in folks. Walking through the streets of Troy, I've found that most people's moods seem to get better, with many wearing a smile, and in a good mood.
It doesn't matter what kind of trash life has been loading on your shoulders throughout the year, the Christmas season makes everyone more pleasant.
So no matter what you celebrate this time of the year, whether it be Christmas, Hanuka, Kwanzaa, or Festivus, make the best of it and be nice to someone. It doesn't have to be anything special, maybe just a smile, a friendly greeting, or a kind word.
All to often we forget that just one act of kindness to our fellow man, can sometimes make a world of difference in someones life. So to all of you reading this, Merry Christmas and a happy, and safe holiday.

Day of Infamy Not to be Forgotten:

This morning I decided to ask the first three people I ran into if they knew what today was. The first two replied with today's date, and the third asked me if it was my birthday. For those who do not know, today is, "a day that will live in infamy," Pearl Harbor day.
On December 7, 1941, the Pearl Harbor Navel Base in Hawaii was invaded by Japanese forces, killing thousands of American soldiers. It's a shame that this sad event which rallied a nation, receives very little mention in today's media.

If you see a veteran today in your travels, especially one who served in WWII, stop, shake their hand, and say thank you for your sacrifice. We enjoy the freedoms we have in our country, primarily due to the sacrifices these men and women made back then. God Bless them & God Bless America.

Monster Fundraiser On Wednesday:

I'm back after a 3 week hiatus from the world of Blogs. You'll be seeing multiple postings over the next few days, as many things are happening around town over the next few weeks.

Let me start today by telling you about a fundraising effort that I am involved with, that will take place on Wednesday evening at Revolution Hall. My dear friend, singer, Tommy Love, was diagnosed with cancer this past summer. He's fought a fierce battle over the past few months, which culminated with the removal of one of his kidneys. Tom has been slowly but surely recovering, and will taking a giant step forward at the fundraiser, in his return to the stage.
I've had the pleasure over the past few months, in working with other veteran members of the local music scene to put together this effort to help Tom out with some of the astronomical out of pocket medical expenses he now has on his shoulders. Working with Jim Barrett, Joe Mele, Scott McPherson, Luke MacNamee, and Jared Kingsley , has been a fun experience, as I've known some of them for the better part of 3 decades.

The doors at Revolution Hall open at 7 p.m., with the first act going on stage at 7:30 p.m. The Mysteios open the night, with performances following by, The Savilles, Blue Machine, Super 400, and the outrageous, Blue Hand Luke. A super jam will follow after the last act, with some of the area's top musicians coming in for the jam. Admission is $10, with raffles being held all evening for gift certificates which were donated by local businesses.

So please join us for what is shaping up to be, the most explosive show of the year. Help us show the love, for Tommy Love.

A Hardware Store That Tim the Toolman Would Love:

In case you haven't noticed, Troy has a new hardware store. I visited the city's newest business a few days ago, excited that I no longer had to travel across the river, or to North Greenbush or Brunswick for those occasional Tim the Toolman moments I get. My latest mission is to re-caulk the windows of my Lansingburgh home. I was greeted at the door of the old Stanley building, now renamed, The Conservatory, by Jeff and Deane Pheil, owners of Pheil Hardware. The developers have been friends of mine for 7 years, and they never cease to amaze me with their knack for turning vacant buildings, into something the community can be proud of.
The former department store has been completely renovated, with lofts on the second floor, and retail space at street level. The hardware store has a complete stock of anything you may need in getting your home ready for the winter months. It was actually refreshing walking through the aisle's, checking out the merchandise in this latest jewel of downtown -- and a great break from the Big Box store adventures I've taken over the years. Plus, the prices were extremely competitive with the chain stores.
I was taking notice on how the other customers were doing with their sales people, and was impressed at the knowledge of the products that the employee's were sharing with the prospective buyers. Clean Fuel at Gendrons North Troy:

About a month ago I saw a sign at Gendron's Pit Stop in North Troy advertising their, Ethenol Free gasoline. Believe me when I tell you, my vehicle is running much better than before after just one month. I've done quite a bit of reading on Ethanol added to your gas, and have come to the conclusion that my 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee is better off without the additive, based solely on its performance since I made the switch. Gendron's gas prices are also cheaper than the majority of stations around the area also.
I also get all of my repair work done there because Gendron's is an honest shop to do business with. Never once in the decade I've been patronizing Gendron's, have they ever tried to do any unnecessary work on any of my vehicles. Nor have I had to return my vehicle because of a screw up on their part. Honest mechanics are hard to find, but you can find this one at the corner of 5th Ave and 125th St. in Lansingburgh.

Chow -Dah Festival Number 3:

The third annual 'Chowder Festival' takes place on Sunday, September 20th, beginning at 10 a.m. This event was an instant hit in 2007, drawing thousands of people to sample the many variety of chowders prepared by an array of local restaurants. Last year, a stronger musical presence was added to go along with the ever growing group of contestants. Highlighted with an appearance by country star, Jimmy Wayne -- who just happened to have the number one hit on the country charts at the time!
This year promises to be even bigger, with 20 plus vendors entered to win the annual chowder simmer fest.
Sundays event will feature by local Blue Grass favorites, Twisted String Band at 11 a.m. Seventeen year old country sensation, Renee' Lussier takes over the stage at 12:30 with her fabulous band, Branchwater. At 2:30, the 'Ultimate Country/ Rock Weapon,' Loose Cannon Live' comes back to Troy for the third time this season. The 9 piece, country horn band features the 'Ultimate Country Front Man, Greg Simmons, and is comprised of a veteran professional lineup of fantastic musicians! Loose Cannon was the surprise hit at the recent Ford Country Festival, opening for four straight days for some of the biggest country stars in the world.
Chowder, ice cream, and great music -- sounds like a plan to me!

Eddie Money Will Be Sh Sh Sh Sh Shakin:

Eddie Money returns to the Collar City on Saturday, September 19th to kick off Troy's Quadricentennial celebration. Thousands of people flooded the streets for his performance at the All Star Fan Fest in August of 2008, and were treated to a classic Eddie Money performance. The rock icon is excited about returning to Troy once again, and promises another rockin show to start the Quad off with a bang! Music, food and sunshine have been the norm for Troy's summer events this year, and Saturday promises to offer more of the same.
